SCOTTVILLE – Cole VanderHaag scored 23 points in leading the Mason County Central boys basketball team past Hesperia, 62-39 in a West Michigan Conference Rivers Division game Thursday night.

Trent Hawke added 10 points, Jose Lopez eight and Jaxon Munoz six on Senior Night at the Spartans’ gym.

VanderHaag knocked down three triples in the second half to help the Spartans open up the lead.
Central led by just four, 14-10 at the end of the first quarter but then doubled up the Panthers, 16-8 in the second to build a 30-18 lead at half.

Hesperia kept the scoring close in the third quarter, with the Spartans gaining just a 13-12 edge in the period but they still held a 43-30 advantage.

Dom Riveria scored 10 points to lead the Panthers, while Malakal Sellers added eight.

The Spartans improved to 13-9 on the season and 9-3 in the conference. They open district tournament action next Wednesday at Shelby.

Hesperia fell to 6-16 on the season and 3-9 in the conference. The Panthers begin the post-season at the district in Manistee next Monday.
