NEWAYGO – The Newaygo girls basketball team grew their winning streak to six with a 47-40 win over Shelby at the Newaygo County Showcase on Saturday.

“Great effort from the girls this evening. Shelby is a well-coached and talented team,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “Big team win for the girls.”

The Lions held a 25-22 lead by halftime and 37-32 by the end of the third quarter and the lead held to the end.

The Lions’ Ruby Hughes posted a double-double of 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Kaelyn Stephens scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds, while Amaya Lathrop and Naomi Schillman added six points apiece.

Jayna Burmeister recorded a double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Tigers. Kylie Brown grabbed seven rebounds and Michelle Peterson made four assists.

Newaygo (12-2, 6-1) visits Tri County on Friday for CSAA-Red play.

Shelby (12-2, 7-1) will be at Hart for a WMC-Rivers game on Tuesday.
