NEWAYGO – The Newaygo girls’ basketball team finished a successful regular season with a 50-31 win over Coopersville on Tuesday night.

The Lions finished the season with an 18-3 overall record.

Ruby Hughes led Newaygo with 12 points, 10 rebounds and two steals, while Kija Schultz had 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Amaya Lathrop chipped in nine points and five steals for the Lions and Naomi Schillman contributed with six points and four rebounds.

Newaygo was ahead 31-27 at the end of the third quarter and closed out the contest with a 19-4 fourth-quarter run to pull away.

“Much better game on the offensive end of the court tonight for the Lions,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma.  “We shot the ball much better than last Friday and were able to get to the free-throw line tonight.

“I thought Ruby (Hughes) did a great job inside tonight against some stiff competition and I thought we had a good response in the third quarter after Coopersville made a little bit of a run on us.”
