COCOA BEACH, Fla. – The Muskegon Community College Lady Jayhawk softball team continued their solid start to the season on their trip to Florida.
 
The Lady Jayhawks had a twinbill on Wednesday. MCC defeated Kalamazoo Valley Community College 12-4 then dropped a 4-3 decision to Williston State.
 
On Thursday, MCC came back and defeated Williston State, 8-6.
 
In Wednesday’s opener, Megan Barnes and Kaylee Jones, a pair of Reeths-Puffer graduates, led the Lady Jayhawks’ hitting attack with three hits each. Barnes also scored two runs and knocked in one run. Jones had three runs scores and had four stolen bases.
 
Delaney Vollmer had two hits and Fruitport’s Olive Staal had one hit and three RBI.
 
Grace Lewis was the winning pitcher. She allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out three in five innings of work.
 
In Wednesday’s second game, MCC lost a tight, one-run game. Barnes and Andrea Romero, from Oakridge, each had a pair of hits. Vollmer pitched 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits.
 
On Thursday, the Lady Jayhawks came back and defeated Williston State behind the complete game pitching of Newaygo’s Sydney Kirk. She allowed six runs and struck out two in seven innings on the mound.
 
Leading hitters were Barnes, Romero and Montague’s Kennedy Johnson with two hits each. Lauren Merrit, from Greenville, had two RBI and scored twice.
 
MCC (5-2) concludes its spring trip through Saturday.
