GRANT – Payton Shoemaker was solid on the mound and helped Grant take down Chippewa Hills and clinch the CSAA-Red softball title on Thursday.

The Tigers routed Chippewa Hills, 20-1, in the opening game, then narrowly escaped with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap thanks to a late run scored in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Shoemaker gave up three hits and struck out six batters in the circle in Game 1, and went 2-for-2 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI at the plate.

Lily Gee had two doubles, while Ella Brummel added a triple and a double. Alexa Obenauf, Addison Herrmann and Reese Gragg each had a double. Emma Thompson belted a two-run homer.

Shoemaker came on in relief in Game 2 and secured the win, allowing only one hit and striking out eight batters.

Gragg led the offense with two hits, including a triple, while Lilly De Los Santos chipped in a pair of hits. Obenauf and Shoemaker each had a double. Brummel threw in a hit and two RBI.

Grant (22-6, 19-1) will compete in the Newaygo County Tournament at Hesperia on Saturday.
