The Muskegon Lumberjacks finished their three-game weekend strong with a 5-1 win over the Central Illinois Flying Aces on Sunday evening.
The Lumberjacks, who came off their second loss of the season last night, jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period and led 4-1 heading into the final stanza.
Muskegon is now 12-2 on the season, good for 24 points and first place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference standings. The Lumberjacks currently hold a six-point advantage over second place Central Illinois.
The Lumberjacks will host the Cedar Rapids Roughriders on Saturday at the L.C. Walker Arena. Faceoff is slated for 7:15 p.m.
The Flying Aces opened the scoring with a Jeremy Davidson goal at the 9:48 mark of the first period.
The Lumberjacks tied the game 1-1 with a power play goal from Colby Bukes at the 11:24 mark of the first stanza.
Muskegon took a 2-1 advantage 31 seconds later at the 11:55 mark on a goal by Brock Bremer.
Egor Afanasyev increased the Lumberjacks lead to 3-1 at the 16:42 mark of the opening period.
Muskegon added a goal in both the second and third periods on tallies from Alex Yakovenko.
The Lumberjacks outshot Central Illinois by a 25-21 margin.
Muskegon’s goaltender Brandon Bussi stopped 20 of 21 shots.
