REED CITY – Shelby’s boys soccer team battled their way through a timid start on Saturday and defeated Reed City on their home pitch, 8-0.

Shelby’s hesitant nature didn’t last long, however, as Ignacio Ortiz netted the first goal of the day on an assist from Mauricio Castillo. Their confidence only increased as the first half went on, finishing the first 40 minutes with a 4-0 lead.

Four more goals were scored in the second half to put the Tigers on top for good, 8-0. Castillo and Alan Arreola led the way with two goals scored each. Wyatt Dickman, Venancio Cadena and Andy Vega each notched one alongside Ortiz.

Castillo also was responsible for two assists, while Carson Stovall, Dickman and Arreola all had one.

The Tigers will begin conference games this week, starting at 5:30 p.m. Monday when they host Montague.
