WHITE CLOUD – Late-game dramatics were in full effect when White Cloud football hosted Shelby on Friday and finished the game on a blocked field goal attempt by Landyn McGowen to win 13-12.

McGowen was the star of the night for the Indians, making his presence felt in all three phases. Apart from the blocked field goal to win the game, McGowen recorded two sacks on defense and also punched in both of White Cloud’s touchdowns.

The Indians got valuable defensive contributions from Conner Stockwell (11 tackles), Jacob Francis (seven tackles), Xander Traynor (seven tackles) and Nate Compeau (1 interception). On offense, Jayson Ruether led through the air with 171 yards passing on 13 completions with favorite target Noah Robinson hauling in four catches for 80 yards. Lloyd Sebright-Johnson had 117 yards rushing.

Shelby’s lethal rushing attack kept them neck and neck with the Indians as they rushed for 284 yards on 41 attempts. Senior AJ Melchor was responsible for 105 yards on the ground. Melchor was also a big piece on defense, coming away with eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

Tigers’ starting quarterback Lalo Garcia went 3-for-10 for 139 yards and a touchdown through the air. He also added a rushing touchdown. Isaac Garcia was the top receiver, turning just two grabs into 116 yards and a touchdown.

White Cloud will be on the road next week as they take on Hart (1-0) at 7 p.m. The Tigers will end their two-game road trip in week two when they test out the new turf at Oriole Field in Ludington, 7 p.m. Both games are set to be played on Thursday.
