GREEN BAY – The Muskegon Lumberjacks fell just short of a comeback win on Sunday.

It was the final game of a three-game against the Green Bay Gamblers.

The Jacks trailed by three goals midway through the final period and scored the final two goals before falling 5-4 against at the Resch Center.

Muskegon drops to 28-16-2 on the season, good for 58 points and third place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference.

The Lumberjacks will return home next weekend for a pair of games starting Friday night against the Madison Capitols.

Green Bay jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Libor Nemec and Julian Lutz 4:45 and 8:42 into the opening period.

Green extended its advantage to 3-0 at the 6:11 mark of the second period with a power-play goal from Ben Poitras.

The Lumberjacks finally responded with a goal from Matvei Gridin at the 7:30 mark of the second period.

The Gamblers regained their three-goal advantage on a goal from Ryan Humphrey at the 12:05 mark before Muskegon closed out the period’s scoring 16:13 in with a goal from Joe Connor.

Nemec added his second goal of the contest for the Gamblers 9:47 into the third period to increase their lead to 5-2.

Muskegon started its comeback effort with a goal from Ethan Whitcomb at the 15:41 mark then added a tally from Cody Croal with just 6 seconds remaining in the contest.

The Lumberjacks outshot Green Bay 39-29. Starting goaltender Beau Lane played just half of the game and stopped 17-of-21 shots faced. Miles Roberts stopped 7-of-8 shots faced in relief.

The Lumberjacks failed to score on their two man-advantages, while Green Bay went 2-for-3 on its power play.
