The Muskegon Clippers’ pitching staff came through in a big way on Wednesday night and led the Clippers to a 2-1 victory over the Southern Ohio Copperheads.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League game was played in Ohio at Bob Wren Stadium.

Six Muskegon pitchers combined to limit the hosts to a single run. Zach Vriesenga was the starter and worked the first four innings. He allowed one run on three hits. Benjamin VanNes, Dylan Kaminski, Owen Willard, Garrett Brewer and Benjamin Kochany each pitched one inning and did not allow a run. Kochany was credited with the save.

The Clippers, which had just four hits, got on the board in the top of the third inning. Carson McCoy led off with a double and scored on a single by Justin Oosterhouse, who finished the game with two hits. Gabe Bonemer had the other Clipper hit.

In the eighth, McCoy walked, advanced to third on an error by the pitcher and scored on a wild pitch.

The teams will complete their three-game series Thursday night before the Clippers (7-4) return home for the weekend. The Xenia Scouts will be at Marsh Field for three straight games starting Friday night.

Muskegon is now in second place in the standings, 1 1/2 games behind the Hamilton Joes.
