GRAND RAPIDS – The Montague girls wrestling team competed in the Northview Invitational on Saturday.
Ava Pelton was winning, 11-2, in the finals, but was caught with a pin and finished runner-up. Zania Meza wrestled her way to a third-place finish.
Last week at the Grand Haven Invitational, Pelton became the first girl in the school’s history to log 100 career victories. In the championship match, she hit the milestone while Casey Baranoski, the first female in the state to record 100 wins, was the official.
“We did some calculating on the numbers and realized that Ava actually achieved her 100th win last Saturday when she won the championship match,” said Montague coach Kristoffer Maddox. “We didn’t tell Ava and surprised her with the banner and announcement today.”
Pelton is 19-4 on the season.
