MONTAGUE – Surviving a rough start to the third quarter, the Montague girls basketball team put together a solid team effort against Manistee on Friday night.

The Wildcats pulled out a 56-48 West Michigan Conference Lakes Division win over Manistee on Senior Night.

Backed by the duo of Braylyn Bultema and Addison Pranger, Montague was able to overcame Manistee’s Alayna Edmondson. Bultema and Pranger scored 15 points apiece for Montague which was key as Edmondson finished with a game-high 24 points for the Mariners.

Montague overcame a slow start to the game when they settled for a 10-10 tie to end the first quarter. But they clamped down on defense in the second quarter and outscored the Mariners, 20-7 to take a 30-17 edge at halftime.

Despite early third quarter struggles, the Wildcats were only outscored by three points, 14-11 and still held a 41-31 lead going into the fourth. The lead held for Montague despite being outscored 17-15 in the final quarter.

Maizie Collins and Avah Vandermeulen chipped in nine apiece to help lift Montague.

Manistee’s Grace Whitmer and Hattie Driver contributed nine each in the loss.

Montague improved to 10-7 on the season and 7-3 in the conference. The Wildcats travel to Ludington for another conference game on Tuesday.

The Mariners dropped to 6-9 on the season and 4-6 in the conference. Manistee hosts Frankfort in a non-conference game Monday night.
