Second-half outburst lifts Ludington to Division 2 district victory over Fremont, 71-49

 

NEWAYGO – After a tight first half, the Ludington boys basketball team punched its ticket to the MHSAA Division 2 district finals with an overwhelming 71-49 win over Fremont in the semifinals Wednesday night in Newaygo.

 

Fremont successfully kept the Orioles from mounting their transition game throughout the first half and kept things close.

 

But the Orioles were still able to battle the Packers, slugging it out in the middle of the ring and emerged with a 27-25 edge at the break.

 

Steele Stowe scored eight points in the second quarter to keep the Orioles in the game.

 

The game turned in the second half when the Orioles were able to force some Fremont turnovers, which triggered their transition game. Cam Gunsell and Taj Williams were the main beneficiaries for the Orioles, scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively, in the second half.

 

Gunsell finished with 17 on the night, with Williams tossing in 16, Stowe 11 and Alex Smith nine.

 

Mossen Green had a game-high 20 points to lead Fremont.

 

Ludington improved to 14-8 on the season and will play Hart in the district final at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

Fremont finished the season 7-17.
