SUTTONS BAY —Manistee scored two goals in the first half and then hung on for a 2-1 non-conference girls soccer victory over NorthBay on Friday over NorthBay.

NorthBay is a co-op team combining Suttons Bay and Northport.

Manistee coach Kathy Smith said her team came out with good intensity and had good ball possession.

The Chippewas (4-0) scored their first goal within the first five minutes of the game.

In a play that started on the other side of the field, Kate Somsel sent a sharp split ball that Allison Kelley ran in on and worked hard to get a cross off, which Reese Superczynski-Shively controlled and banged in a shot to make it 1-0.

Emily Rabeler knocked home a shot to give the Chippewas a two-goal lead entering the intermission.

“We came out a little flat for the second half and were kind of watching the ball a little bit,” said Smith. “They (NorthBay) really poured it on, so our defense really was working hard clearing the ball out. I credit our defensive line and our goalkeeper (sophomore Piper Eskridge). They were on their toes and clearing wave after wave of attacks.”

NorthBay did score with less than 5 minutes remaining, but the Chippewas were able to finish off the game.

Manistee travels to Orchard View for its second West Michigan Conference game on Monday.
