CUSTER – Mason County Eastern recorded its first boys’ basketball win of the season after two straight losses, topping West Michigan D League foe Walkerville, 54-15.

In the game played in Custer, the Cardinals turned up the defensive heat on the visiting Wildcats and shifted their offense into high gear right from the opening tip.

“The guys played with tons of energy and it was a fun night,” said Eastern coach Austin Boundy. “We ran our offense well and got tons of rebounding from Keith Craig and Aaron Drake. Danny Bothwell and Josh Rogers played great defense and facilitated the ball well and got open looks from 3-point land for Kaiden Lague, Milo Shoup, and Danny Steffes.

“As a coach, the main thing I’m looking for is whether or not you play hard, and I was happy to see all 10 guys playing extremely hard today.”

Craig topped all scorers with 18 points to lead the Cardinals, while Rogers tossed in 12 and Drake added nine.

Eastern improved to 1-2 on the season and is 1-0 in the WMD. The Cardinals host Bear Lake in another WMD game on Wednesday.
