Hewitt, 50, reportedly was jogging in the area, collapsed and died shortly after, according to a release sent to high school staff members by Tracy Wilson, the building’s principal.

Hewitt had taken over the varsity boys’ basketball before the 2005-06 season following the retirement of Craig Taylor.

During his nine years as head coach, Hewitt’s teams had a 60-57 record in O-K Conference Red Division games. Grand Haven shared the league title during the 2009-10 season with Rockford at 12-2 before advancing to the quarterfinal round in the Division 1 state tournament.

Hewitt had his best single-season record that year by going 21-5. Grand Haven finished the season 9-12 this past season.

Hewitt is survived by his wife, Kate, and sons Will, Cam and Drew. Drew is a junior at Grand Haven High School.

Hewitt is the second Grand Haven staff member to pass away in recent months. Robin Bye, the former athletic director, passed away during spring break in April after an extended illness.

Funeral arrangements for Hewitt have yet to be announced.
