Leah Vaughn slugged the Spring Lake softball team into the next round of districts.

The sophomore’s fifth-inning grand slam blew the game open for the Lakers, who defeated Fruitport 8-3 on Tuesday in a Division 2 pre-district game.

Vaughn’s homer game the Lakers an 8-0 lead after five innings, but the Trojans fought hard until the end. Brooklyn Samlow smashed one over then fence in the sixth inning to end Spring Lake’s bid for a shutout.

Vaughn complemented her offensive performance by earning the win on the mound, giving up six hits and fanning 11 batters. Vaughn, Linsey Paggeot and Ann Marie Galloway led the Lakers offensively with two hits apiece.

Sanlow and Alexis Jurgens each had two hits for Fruitport.
