Muskegon’s Kelsey McKinley is tied for third after Thursday’s first round of the Adams Tour Championship.

The opening round was played on the Forest Akers East Course on Thursday. On Friday, the players will head to the West Course. The courses are on the campus of Michigan State University.

Other area golfers in the tournament include Hailey Hrynewich and Valerie Muyskens on the girls’ side and Andrew VanAelst and Mitchell White for the boys. VanAelst had the best score among the area players with a 1-under-par 71.

McKinley shot an opening-round 76, which is 4-over par. She finished the round with two birdies, four bogeys and one double bogey.

Hrynewich came in with a 5-over-par 77. She finished her round with one birdie, four bogeys and one double bogey. She is in seventh place.

Muyskens, from Whitehall, is tied for 13th after shooting a 13-over-par 85.

In all, there are 25 girls in the tournament. The leader after one round is Makayla Dull of Fremont, Ohio, with a 2-over-par 74.

VanAelst posted a steady round with four birdies and three bogeys. He is tied for sixth place.

White shot a 1-over-par 73 in the opening round. He had six birdies, four bogeys and struggled on a par 5, on which he scored an 8. He is tied for 12th place.

The boys leader is A.J. Varekois, from Rockford. He had nine birdies en route to a 6-under-par 66.

There are 33 boys competing for the tour championship.
