The Western Michigan Christian Warriors posted a solid road victory on Thursday with a 3-0 River Valley Conference victory at Hudsonville Freedom Christian.
The Warriors scored once in the opening half and twice in the second half while outshooting the Falcons 22-4.
“This was a good tune up game for us before Saturday’s match with Division 3-ranked (No. 4) Whitehall,” WMC coach David Hulings said. “I thought the boys played well in every part of the game tonight with some of our bench players and young players playing the best they have played.”
The Warriors scored near the midpoint of the first half on a corner kick. Matt VanderPloeg lofted a corner kick to the goal box, where Lucas Negan redirected it past the Falcons’ goalkeeper.
Another corner kick produced another goal 10 minutes into the second half. VanderPloeg sent a corner kick to the front of the goal where junior Alex Rop punched it into the net.
In the game’s final minute, Sam Mast dashed up the right side and put a centering pass to the front of the net, where Bailey Heykoop scored.
Jacob Berens and Christian Rogers combined on the shutout for WMC (6-3-1, 3-0-1).
“Since we haven’t scored a lot of goals in the run of the play lately, it was nice to get one of those tonight, even though it was late in the game,” Hulings said. “We are doing so well on set piecesk, we tend to relax in the attacking third. We have to get more aggressive and assertive in the opponents box. That will be a real test on Saturday.”
