In a game that went down to the wire, the Fremont Packers were edged 61-59 by the Sparta Spartans.

The game was tied after three quarters but the Spartans were able to escape with the victory, a Class B district title and a berth in Monday’s regional game at Fremont. The Spartans will face Spring Lake, a 53-46 winner over Whitehall on Friday night.

“We lost a heartbreaker after leading for much of the game,” Fremont coach Pete Zerfas said. “Dylan Krim hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to give us a four-point lead going into halftime. The rest of the game was back and forth right to the end, where we missed a couple of shots and they hit them.”

Ben Scheckler led Sparta with 30 points and Jared Bradford added 17.

Fremont was led by Dylan Krim with 20 points and Mike Siegel added 18. Mike MacLean also reached double figures with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Siegel’s point total pushed him over the 1,000-point plateau. He ended his career with 1,001.

The Packers finished 13-9 while Sparta moves on with its 17-5 record.
