The Muskegon girls basketball team took its time getting started Thursday, trailing Oakridge by five points after one quarter.

But the Big Reds found their game after that, plowing their way to a 58-48 victory in a matchup of local powers in the Muskegon Area Hall of Fame Classic at Mona Shores High School.

Muskegon is the defending O-K Red Conference champion, while Oakridge is the defending West Michigan Conference co-champ. Both returned several standout players this season and are expected to be among the best teams in the area.

But Thursday belonged to the Big Reds, who sealed the victory by hitting 11 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Muskegon’s Jade Page scored a game-high 21 points.
