Katie McKinnon sank a basket with less than a second remaining, giving the Muskegon Community College women’s basketball team a 64-62 comeback victory Tuesday over the Hope College junior varsity squad.

Hope jumped out to an early 13-2 lead and led 22-8 midway through the first half. MCC chipped away and cut the first half deficit to 33-27.

MCC’s Abby Rodriguez dominated the second half, shooting 6 for 7 from behind the three-point arc.

The Jayhawks led for the first time at 51-50 with six minutes remaining. Then they used nine straight Rodriguez points on three consecutive triples to take a 62-57 lead with two minutes remaining.

Hope tied the game with 48 seconds left on a three-point field goal by Vanessa Freberg. MCC then got a defensive stop with 6.7 seconds left. The Jayhawks  executed a sideline inbounds with a pass from Taylor Brown to McKinnon, who made the winning shot as time expired.

The Jayhawks improved to 3-1 on the season.

Rodriguez led the Jayhawks with 24 points (8-14 3’s), five steals and five assists. Morgan Giddings double doubled with 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
