The Spring Lake boys basketball team got off to a strong start Tuesday then held on for a 72-66 victory over Mona Shores in a non-league game on its home court.

The Lakers, who led from start to finish, were outscored 29-18 in the fourth quarter. The Sailors cut their deficit to three points with one minute left in the game, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

“From start to finish we had the lead but we didn’t close it out like we wanted to,” said Spring Lake coach Bill Core, whose team is off to a 2-1 start. “But we are very humble to get the victory.”

Kyle Zietlow, Zach Montgomery, and Keegan George led the Lakers with 15 points each. Mark Williamson and Nathan Batts added 10 points apiece.

The Sailors (0-3) were led by Darece Roberson Jr. with 28 points while Tyler Trovinger added 16 points.

“Shores will be a dangerous team once they get rid of their football legs,” Core said.
