Team officials have narrowed their coaching search to two unidentified candidates and are expected to name their choice within a few weeks, according to team owner Terrance “T.J.” Williams.

But the nickname will be chosen by fans, beginning almost immediately..

The team will officially launch its new website on Friday at 5 p.m. Fans can go to the site at that time and start voting for the nickname of their choice.

They have five selections to choose from  – the West Michigan Ironmen, West Michigan River Rats, West Michigan Melee, West Michigan Marauders and West Michigan Breakers.

The team will have the “West Michigan” designation, rather than “Muskegon,” to appeal to a wider regional audience, Williams said.

Voting for the team nickname will continue through the end of October. Fans can vote as many times as they like.

The team’s website can be accessed at www.wmarenafb.com.

The team will play at Muskegon’s L.C. Walker Arena and  compete in the American Indoor Football League. It will play a 10-game regular season schedule in the spring, beginning in March.

Even more teams in the league

The AIFL, which has been experiencing rapid expansion this fall, has announced the addition of three more teams – the Florida Tarpons (Fort Myers), Myrtle Beach Freedom (South Carolina) and St. Louis Attack (Missouri).

The league also announced that the Maryland Eagles are relocating to Washington D.C. and will be known as the Washington Eagles and the York (Pennsylvania) Capitals are moving to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and will be called the Central PA Capitals.
