After a successful start to the season on Thursday, the Hesperia volleyball team dropped a pair of non-league matches on Friday to Newaygo and Shelby.

The Panthers lost the first game to Newaygo 25-20, won the second set 25-18, then lost the third and deciding set 15-12.

Against Shelby, Hesperia fell 25-22 in the first game and 27-25 in the second. The Panthers were within one point of winning the second set before the Tigers rallied to steal it at the end.

The two teams played a third set to get some extra court time, and Hesperia won 15-11.

Emily Bayle and Rachel Romero led Hesperia with 14 and 9 kills, respectively. Bayle also served five aces while Kyra Slayer had 20 assists and Aria Thomas added 13.

Defensively, Bayle led with 30 digs, Romero had 23, and Adriana Escobedo added 13.

Hesperia is now 1-2 on the season.
