The Montague baseball team got its first victory of the season with a 6-5 win in Game 1 of a non-conference doubleheader against Forest Hills Eastern on Friday.

The Wildcats lost the second game 5-3.

Sam Smith was the winning pitcher, tossing 1 1/3 innings of relief. Tugg Nichols had two hits and an RBI while Owen Peterson had one hit and one RBI and scored twice. Nick Moss, Aidan Buchberger and Colton Blankstrom all had one hit and one RBI.

In the Game 2 loss, Nick Moss went 2-for-3 for Montague with two RBIs.

Montague is now 1-4 on the season.

MORLEY STANWOOD 4-2 HOLTON 0-3 – The Red Devils picked up a split in a CSAA Silver doubleheader

In Game 1, Aidan Poling pitched 5 ⅔ innings, allowing three runs on three hits with  11 strikeouts in a losing effort. Poling, Cody Moreen and Chase Albright led the offense with one hit apiece.

Holton got even with a victory in Game 2. Moreen turned in a stellar performance on the mound, going 6 ⅓ innings while allowing two unearned runs on one hit and collecting nine strikeouts. Poling picked up a save in relief, striking two batters out in ⅔ of an inning.

Austin Fowler led the offense, driving in two runs, while Moreen helped his own cause by picking up an RBI.

The Red Devils pitching staff recorded 23 strikeouts, and only allowed four hits on the night. 

Holton is now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

GRAND RAPIDS WEST CATHOLIC 10-8, OAKRIDGE 0-1 – Corey Vanderputte had the only hits for Oakridge in Game 1 of the non-conference doubleheader.

Oakridge hurt itself by committing five errors in Game 2. Andy Johnston led the Eagles with two hits while Ethan Josza scored the lone run.

ZEELAND WEST 5, REETHS-PUFFER 0 – Cold bats killed the Rockets in the O-K Green matchup.

Kendall Smith got the start on the mound for Reeths-Puffer, throwing five innings and striking out three. Jeremy Ardshahi tossed two strong innings in relief.

Ardshahi had the lone hit for RP, and Kaden Edwards also reached base twice with two walks.

Reeths-Puffer (1-2) will host Mona Shores Tuesday.
