SPRING LAKE — Ludington’s boys swim team hadn’t been in the pool for a long stretch due to COVID-19 protocols and the weather, so coach Joe Schneider wasn’t sure how the team would look Saturday competing at the Spring Lake Invitational.

The Orioles understandably were concerned that it might not be a good day for them, but everyone cut their times and swam well in the five-team meet won by Spring Lake.

Evan Bennett was the only Oriole who picked up a first place finish, winning the diving event with a total of 389.00 points.

Several others recorded top eight finishes, including the 200-yard medley relay squad that included Hayden Madl, Lucas Peterson, Lucas Miller and Bennett who combined for a fourth place time of 1:59.84.

In addition, the same group was also fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with their time of 1:44.96 while Rowen Vaara, Mathew Snyder, Kyle Wendt and Gavin Smith grabbed fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:19.91.

Madl timed 1:08.30 in the 100-yard backstroke for third place.

Snyder also swam in the 50-yard freestyle and was eighth in a time of 26.65 seconds, while Bennett was fifth in 1:08.34. Lucas Miller swam the 100-yard butterfly in 1:13.87 and finished eighth.

Peterson was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:32.14, while Vaara trailed behind him in sixth place with a time of 6:35.39. Peterso also finished seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with w time of 1:17.28. Snyder’s time of 1:03.82 in the 100-yard freestyle was good for eighth place.

The Orioles next see action on Thursday at Mona Shores beginning at 6 p.m.
