GRAND HAVEN — Grand Haven’s girls softball team pulled out a 5-3 victory over Rockford in a single game in the OK Conference on Thursday afternoon at home.

The Buccaneers scored early, thanks to a fielding error by the Rams, and then scored a pair in the fifth inning to cement its lead for good.

Skylar Covelli tripled to drive in one run, while another came home on Regan Riemersma’s ground out.

Hannah Aldred was the winning pitcher, throwing a seven-inning complete game and allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out 14 and not giving up a walk.

Savanna Collins was the pacesetter on offense, rapping three hits in four at-bats and the Buccaneers were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Michayla Chciuk had 14 chances, the most on the team.

“Rockford really tested us tonight,” said Buccaneers head coach John Hall. “We were put in some pressure packed situations, and the girls really buckled down and relied on experience to get through.

“Sky’s big triple late in the game was a huge swing. We challenged someone to light a spark, and she did it in a big way. Savanna Collins has been a rock so far in this early part of the year. She had some huge hits today.
“Hannah Aldred was lights out in the circle.”
