SHELBY — In a battle of Tigers, it was Grant that came out on top by a narrow 48-44 margin over Shelby.

The non-conference game was played Monday in Shelby.

But in the first half, it was the Shelby Tigers who had the upper hand, 18-14 at the half.

Grant took over in the third quarter, outscoring Shelby, 18-9, to build a 32-27 lead.

“I really thought we played much better, but we didn’t outscore them,” said Shelby coach Richard Zoulek. “A scoring drought in the third quarter doomed us.”

Shelby outrebounded Grant 39-28 and each team had 15 turnovers.

“When we start converting more consistently on offense we will get and keep leads,” Zoulek said.

Austin Whitney scored 12 points to lead Grant.

Bishop Lee paced Shelby with 17 points and 15 rebounds, followed by Mason Garcia with 12 points, four assists and five steals. Carson Claeys added eight rebounds.

Grant (2-1) returns to action Tuesday (tonight) at Holton in another non-conference game.

Shelby (0-3) returns to West Michigan Conference Rivers Division action Thursday night at Ravenna.
