RAVENNA — Grace Painter hit a 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining in the game and lifted the Newaygo Lions to a 38-35 victory over the Ravenna Bulldogs on Monday.

Newaygo trailed 29-23 after three quarters before mounting a fourth-quarter comeback. The Lions outscored the Bulldogs 15-6 in the final quarter.

Painter finished with 12 points, on four 3-pointers, five rebounds and two steals. Naomi Schillman had 11 points and three rebounds. Barbara Toth had 10 points and six rebounds.

Ravenna led 11-3 after one quarter and 20-12 at the half.

“The girls played with great effort tonight,” said Newaygo coach Nate Thomasma. “The big difference was that we hit some shots in the second half and we didn’t turn over the ball as much. I thought we scrapped a lot better for 50-50 balls.”

Ravenna was led by Addison and Emma Gillard with 10 points each.

“We just kept battling and competing and we were able to come out on the good side of one of these games,” Thomasma said.

Newaygo (5-13) takes on Howard City Tri-County on Friday night.

Ravenna (5-10) hosts Mason County Central on Tuesday night.
