TRAVERSE CITY – The Fruitport and Mona Shores volleyball teams kicked off the season at the Traverse City West Invitational on Saturday. 

The Trojans went 1-3 and the Sailors split at 2-2.

Fruitport fell to Traverse City St. Francis (24-26, 26-28), Rockford (16-25, 7-25) and Traverse City Central (13-25, 11-25), but defeated Glen Lake (25-19, 28-26).

Gracelynn Olson led the Trojans with 55 assists, 20 digs and four aces while Sadie Haase added 31 kills and seven blocks. Lauren Riedel and Tara Sweet chipped in with 40 digs and four aces, respectively.

The Sailors earned victories against Traverse City Central (21-25, 25-18, 16-14) and Traverse City St. Francis (25-23, 25-20). The losses came at the hands of Byron Center (18-25, 14-25) and Mt. Pleasant (20-25, 25-27).

Cece Gappa had 21 kills and 20 digs while Kyann Hellmann had 65 assists and 23 digs. Izzy Sturtevant had 37 digs and 11 assists.

Also, Grace Allen had 19 kills and Jersey VanderWall had 16 kills on the day.

Fruitport will be back to action on Friday for the annual Battle of the Boardwalk.

Mona Shores will compete in the early invitational at Grand Haven on Tuesday.
