GRANDVILLE — Almost perfect.

Only one hiccup spoiled an otherwise spotless run through the Calvin Christian Invite on Saturday, and that wasn’t a loss. The Orioles split against Spring Lake, and came away holding the championship trophy.

The six victories the Orioles chalked up were over Wyoming Potter House (25-10, 25-10), Zion Christian (25-13, 25-10), Wyoming (25-11, 25-13), Spring Lake (25-21, 25-20) and Allendale (25-18, 25-19).

“We had a good offensive game,” said Ludington coach Liz Holden. “But, our defense stepped up in a big way. There were a lot of tips coming our way, but our defense did a great job of getting them up and putting balls away.

“Spring Lake battled hard and took a set from us in pool play, so the girls had to work extra hard when we met them the first game of the championship pool. They brought that intensity into the final game against Allendale.”

Karli Mesyar was the defensive leader with 75 digs to which she added 12 assists, five aces and three kills. Jordyn Anderson set the Orioles up for big time kills with an amazing 101 assists while ripping 13 kills and getting nine blocks.

Mia Voss was tops at the net in the front row with 28 kills and she also contributed five digs and five blocks.

Jaelyn Laird was a step off Voss’s pace up front with 27 kills. She also added nine blocks. Ashley McPike hammered down 25 kills at the net and finished wiht eight blocks and three aces.

Ludington will host Orchard View in a West Michigan Conference Lakes Division contest on Tuesday.
