EVART – The Muskegon Catholic Crusader defense stopped a 2-point conversion with 33 seconds remaining in the game Friday to preserve a 21-19 victory over host Evart.
 
That outcome means the Crusaders (6-4) will face Beal City, a 42-7 winner over Frankfort, next week in the second round of the Division 8 playoffs. Beal City is 9-1.
 
On Friday, senior quarterback Bryan Convertini scored all three Crusader touchdowns on runs of 1, 2 and 29 yards. Convertini rushed 26 times for 156 yards to spark the MCC offensive attack.
 
Convertini scored from a yard out in the opening quarter and the Crusaders led 6-0.
 
In the second quarter, Evart scored to give the hosts a 7-6 lead before Convertini scored from 2 yards out. Catholic took the 14-7 lead into halftime.
 
Convertini darted into the end zone from 29 yards out in the third quarter and the Crusaders opened up a 21-7 lead.
 
Evart scored with 6:33 remaining and again with 33 seconds left to pull to within two points.
 
Quinn McKenna led the defense with 10 tackles. Easton Cook added nine.
