LIVONIA – The Muskegon Community College Jayhawks traveled to the east side of the state on Monday and brought home a women’s basketball victory.

The Jayhawks battled through a back-and-forth game, kept their composure down the stretch and defeated Madonna University, 61-57.

“It was a good win on the road tonight,” said Lady Jayhawk coach Jason Cooper. “We are still a work in progress, but the effort was there tonight.”

MCC jumped out to an eight-point lead in the opening quarter, but the Crusaders battled backed. MCC led 30-24 at the half and 43-42 after three quarters.

When the second half started, Madonna made a move and not only tied the game, but took the lead.

But, with 1:30 remaining in the final quarter, the Jayhawks had a six-point lead and were able to run out the clock for their first victory of the season.

Ty’veonna Davis led the Jayhawks (1-1) with 28 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Remi Sponselller also had a strong game with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists. Ali Phillips added eight points, five rebounds and three assists while McKena Wilson had six points and five rebounds. Alexis McMahon had five rebounds.
