MUSKEGON – It wasn’t the kind of start the Muskegon Community College Lady Jayhawks were looking for in the home opener of the 2023-24 basketball season.

MCC fell behind by 17 by halftime and dropped a 68-53 decision to Lake Land College on Thursday night.

The game was played at Bartels-Rode Gymnasium at MCC.

“It was a tough game tonight against a very good team,” Jayhawk coach Jason Cooper said. “We came out slow and nervous in the first half and never fully recovered.

“The second half was better, but you can’t come out the way we did against a Top 10 team in the country.”

The Jayhawks trailed 20-12 after the first quarter and 40-23 at the half.

In the third quarter, MCC hit a couple quick buckets and cut the deficit to 10 points, but could draw no closer. The Jayhawks trailed 55-34 after three quarters.

Ty’veonna Davis led the Jayhawks with 25 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Ali Phillips added seven points, four rebounds and three steals. Remi Sponseller had five points and four rebounds. Alexis McMahon added six rebounds and Arrionna Williams had five. McKena Wilson had three assists.

Audri Spencer led Lake Land with 17 points.

The Jayhawks travel to Madonna University on Monday.
