FREMONT – Mia Clemence put together a season-high game to help the Fremont girls basketball team to a 47-41 comeback win over Grant on Wednesday.
“We were able to beat a very good and well-coached Grant team with grit, determination and a total team effort,” said Fremont coach Pete Zerfas. “It might not always show up on the stat sheet, but every girl that played tonight did her job and that is why we were able to win.”
The Packers led by one point, 14-13, after the first quarter, but fell into turnover issues. That allowed Grant to find opportunities and take a 28-24 lead at halftime. The Tigers continued to maintain a lead, though the Packers managed to cut it down to 35-34 going into the fourth quarter.
The Packers rallied in the closing quarter with a 21-6 scoring run over the last 12 minutes to edge out the Tigers.
“The fourth quarter was just a battle of two teams fighting hard on every possession, but we were able to make a few more shots down the stretch,” said Zerfas.
Clemence posted a double-double of 18 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Jessica Bennett threw in nine points and seven rebounds, while Riley Chase and Taylor DeKuiper scored six points apiece.
Fremont (7-2, 4-0) will host Ravenna on Thursday.
Grant (4-3, 3-0) will be at Howard City Tri County on Friday.
Can see nothing has changed for Fremont even with new coaches. It’s remarkable in today’s society how favoritism still exists or is allowed when it comes to coaching. All it seems to do is break down some of the girls’ self esteem. So much for caring about their mental health.
I understand there are starters and bench players. What I don’t understand is how we can’t seem to find a coach who understands how to properly manage (rotate) them. Grant rotated girls in 4 times in the first quarter before Fremont did once. Fremont also let one girl only come out for one minute in the first and in the second quarter, not at all in the second half. Can’t say because it was a close game when Grant was still rotating players even in the 4th quarter.
No wonder some of the girls’ stats are more “impressive” than others. That said, what’s the point of having bench players if all you’re going to do is consistently play the starters (favorites)?
I’m sorry you feel this way. I am proud of all Fremont girls and the coaches. These ladies work hard and respect the coach and each other💫
I’m sorry you don’t fully see everything right in front of you.
Watch the clock every time he makes a rotation and watch who he rotates in/out. You’ll notice a pattern. I’d understand if time management would equal even close to 60/40. In reality it’s 85/10 or 90/10 if they’re lucky. Why have a whole bench of girls that some don’t even play at all? Why have a bench at all when it’s clear how he feels about them.
Sure, they’re winning, but at what cost?
If you can’t see any of that, I can’t explain it any better.
