WHITEHALL – Despite troubles with execution and shooting, the Holton girls basketball team edged out Whitehall, 30-27, on Monday evening.

“Monday games are typically a little sloppy and tonight did not disappoint,” said Holton coach Robert Jordan. “We just struggled all night on mostly everything, but I’m happy the girls were able to grind out a defensive struggle like tonight as there will be more down the road just like this.”

The teams at 17-all at the half and continued to battle back and forth before the Red Devils managed a slight one-point lead by the end of the third quarter.

The Red Devils narrowly outscored the Vikings 5-3 in the final quarter to bag the win.

Aubrey Goyings led the Red Devils with 13 points and nine rebounds. Ryann Robins added nine points and 10 rebounds, while Abbie Fowler chipped in five assists and four steals.

“We need to get our team intensity back to where it needs to be and fast,” said Jordan. “Every game from here on out is going to be a game where if we don’t show up, we won’t win.”

Holton (8-2, 2-2) will be at Ravenna on Tuesday, Jan. 23 for a WMC-Rivers matchup.

Whitehall (2-7, 1-4) will travel to Shelby on Thursday.
