HESPERIA — Mason County Central lost both wrestling duals in the West Michigan Conference Rivers Division Wednesday night, but had some big individual wins on the night.

The Spartans lost to Hesperia, 54-22, and to Montague, 45-33. Senior 138-pounder Zane McCabe had two wins over ranked opponents.

First, he defeated Blake Sayer (No. 7 in Division 4) of Hesperia in overtime. He followed that up with a second period pin over Chris Aebig (No. 8 in Division 3) of Montague.

“Zane wrestled really well tonight,” Spartans coach Kendel Trimm said. “He scrambles so well and is just so tough to score on.”

Junior 126-pounder Hunter Sanford also scored a win over a ranked opponent with a second period fall over Jimmy Thommen (No. 9 in D3) of Montague.

“Hunter was actually not feeling well, but he decided to tough it out and somewhere in the middle there he worked it out and got a big win,” said Trimm.

Junior 120-pounder Nyveah Wendt scored a win over No. 3 Savannah Winkleblack of Montague.

Wendt was down, 3-0 going into the third period, but scored an escape and two takedowns for the 5-4 victory.

“She just decided she wanted that match more than her opponent did, so she went out and took it.  Thats what wrestling is all about,” Trimm added.

Also winning matches on the night were freshman 106-pounder Dameon Letts, senior 126-pounder Aiden Hirschfeld, freshman 144-pounder William Thomsen, senior 157-pounder Brayden Overmyer, and sophomore 215-pounder Hunter Copsey.

The Spartans’ next match is at the Fallen Bucks Memorial Tournament in Pine River Saturday.
