Varsity Blues Sports Awards show on Saturday night is set to serve up Local Sports Journal’s first-ever production that celebrates and honors local athletes.
The Jensen Brothers Tennis Award acknowledges the area’s top male and female high school tennis stars. The award is part of the special event that starts at 6 p.m. (Door open at 5:15 p.m.)
With nearly 60 high school tennis programs to pick from, the LSJ had its hands full in finding the best of the best on the tennis court. We consulted with coaches and other tennis leaders to come up with nominations for the male and female tennis players.
This year’s nominations for the Jensen Brothers Tennis Award are:
Male
Quinn Alderink – Reeths-Puffer
Drew Hackney – Mona Shores
Luke Hall – North Muskegon
Female
Marilyn Gaston – North Muskegon
Grace Sweet – Fruitport
Brooke Titus – Reeths-Puffer
The special tennis award was drafted from the historic rise of Ludington brothers, Luke and Murphy Jensen.
The two brothers became near icons in the professional tennis circuit with their intense on-court demeanor and style to win matches. They left their mark on the sport in many ways, but most notably when they captured the French Open doubles title in 1993.
The brothers reached the finals in six other tournaments that year and ended ranked fifth in doubles action. In 1994, the Jensen brothers also reached the quarterfinal round in the U.S. Open and the French Open. They were quarterfinalists again in 1995 at the French Open and semifinalists in the U.S. Open.
Both were high school state champions and went on to star at the University of Southern California. Luke finished as an All-American at USC while Murphy transferred after his sophomore season to the University Georgia where he also earned All-American status.
