HART – The Hart softball team earned a non-conference twinbill sweep over Orchard View on Monday.

The Pirates routed the Cardinals in the opener, 13-3, and won the second game, 13-11.

In the first game, Gabby Quijas got the start and gave up four hits and struck out six batters.

Reese Smith had three hits, a double and an RBI, while Kelsey Copenhaver and Gabby Schmieding added two hits and two RBI. Julia Bishop, Quijas and Caydence Bateson also collected hits.

The Cardinals got their bats going in the second game, but Hart prevailed in a close game.

Copenhaver gave up three hits, six runs, seven walks and struck out four. Smith came on in relief and allowed three hits, five runs, two walks and struck out five.

“Overall, we did a nice job of jumping out to a lead in Game 1 and never giving in,” said Hart coach Dean DeVries. “Game 2 was much different and we had to respond to an early deficit. We played pretty clean in the field and hitting was a strong suit tonight.”

Hart (10-4, 0-2) will be at rival Shelby on Tuesday for a WMC Rivers doubleheader.
