The Mona Shores boys’ lacrosse team came out strong right from the start, but needed a little time to start scoring some goals.

In the end, that patience paid off for the Sailors in a 10-0 victory over the Bucs.

“We came out aggressive on offense in the first quarter, but had trouble finishing,” said Mona Shores coach Murle Greer. “Our offense was getting the looks we wanted, but we struggled with shot selection and Grand Haven has a very talented goalie.”

The Sailors were taking the play to the Bucs, but only scored a single goal on its first 15 shots.

When you’re having trouble scoring, you need strong defense and that’s exactly what Mona Shores got.

“The highlight of the night was our defensive play,” Greer said. “The defense was solid all night creating numerous turnovers and clearing the ball to near perfection 11 out of 12 times. The defense helped us dominate time of possession and dictate the pace of the game.”

Sophomore Cullen Conrad led the attack with four goals. Senior Fylan Fett and junior Micah Carefelle each had two goals and one assist. Ezra Carefelle and Hayden Terpstra each scored a single goal.

Defender Andrew Baker led the Sailors with seven ground balls and he also caused three turnovers. Goalies Ben Warren and Matt Tallman combined to post the shutout.

“It feels good to get a win against a strong program like Grand Haven, especially after our first three games,” Greer said. “We needed a confidence boost and we are happy with our play.”

Shores returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday when it hosts Caledonia.
