NORTON SHORES – Reese Smith gave Mona Shores girls lacrosse the push it needed in an exciting 13-12 double-overtime win against Grand Haven on Friday evening.

Smith’s game-winner, her fifth goal of the night, was the first lead the Sailors had throughout the game.

“We battled all night long,” said Mona Shores coach Chip Vasquez. “We never had the lead until the final goal. It was a very physical game and I was very proud of the way we handled ourselves.”

Lainee Carmean had three goals, six ground balls, three interceptions and 10 draw controls. Emma Reelman had three goals to reach her 100th career goal and added three ground balls. Danika Johnson also chipped in a pair of scores.

“I thought our speed wore them down a bit,” Vasquez said. “We had opportunities early that we didn’t capitalize on. As the game went on, our speed, ball pressure and extra possessions gave us the opportunity to win.”

Ansley Hayward made nine saves in the net for Mona Shores.

“Early in the second overtime, Hayward came up with two huge free position saves,” said Vasquez. “She has been an anchor back there all year.”

Mona Shores (5-6, 4-3) will travel to Northview on Tuesday.
