MONTAGUE – The Montague wrestling team got a chance to compete in a dual match in front of the entire student body on Friday.
“I’d like to personally thank our administrators and the students for the opportunity today,” said Montague coach Kristoffer Maddox. “Hopefully, many of them who have never seen a dual can continue to support the sport at our many home events.”
The Wildcats had a tough open, dropping six matches. However, when Toby Heykoop avoided the pin at 138 pounds, the coaches knew they still stood a chance.
With the spark, Gavyn Maddox took a match at 144 pounds and the Wildcats followed with three more consecutive pins. Kaiden Jeffery, Fletcher Thommen and Michael Jones also went on to rattle off three pins.
Though the Wildcats went on to stumble and drop a match at 175 pounds, they rallied back with three more pins from Mason Bassett, Isaac French and Maverick Osborn to secure a 42-41 victory against Grant.
Ava Pelton earned a second period pin after falling behind 6-1 in an opening dual exhibition.
“Having the opportunity to wrestle in front of the entire school was a great experience and it was amazing how into the dual the students were,” said Maddox. “I think starting in a deep hole and pinning our way through really got the students excited. I have to hand it to our guys. We are young and need to learn that sometimes just not getting pinned can be very beneficial.”
Montague’s girls’ squad will host the Lady Mat Cat Invitational on Friday, Dec. 27.
