GRANDVILLE – The Western Michigan Christian girls basketball team overcame a slow start against Grandville Calvin Christian and turned it into a 39-36 victory to close out its regular season on Thursday.

Warrior freshman point guard Madie Folkema brought the energy needed for the comeback against Calvin and Maria Eenigenburg added a third-quarter touch to pull off the win.

Folkema came through with big buckets in the second half and scored all 10 of WMC’s fourth-quarter points. She finished with a game-high 24 points. Eenigenburg followed through with 7-of-8 at the free throw line in the third quarter and added a bucket for all nine of her points in the third.

Trailing 14-6 after the first quarter, Folkema came up with big steals and a 3-pointer at the buzzer of the second quarter to take WMC into the half trailing, 19-15.

After WMC allowed a quick layup by the Knights to start the third, Eenigenburg took over at the free-throw line. The Warriors took their first lead of the third quarter off a Folkema 3-pointer, again just before the end of the quarter.

The Warriors never let go of their lead the rest of the way, but it didn’t come easy. Calvin Christian battled back to trail, 37-36, with 16 seconds remaining. Thankfully for WMC, Folkema iced the game with a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Folkema finished with nine steals and six rebounds on the night while Eenigenburg pulled in nine rebounds.

WMC finishes its regular season with a 12-5 record and will open up the MHSAA state tournament against North Muskegon on Monday.
