ALPENA – The Muskegon Community College men’s basketball team pulled out a conference victory in dramatic fashion on Saturday over the host Alpena Lumberjacks.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Jayhawks had themselves a 75-72 victory.

The game was tied at 70-all with less than 2 minutes remaining when things got a bit hectic. Alpena’s Derian Williams, who finished with 36 points, missed a contested 15-foot jump shot and MCC went back to work on offense. With 1:45 left, Jayhawk guard Kevon Washington hit a clutch 3-pointer to make it 73-70.

Another miss by the Lumberjacks gave MCC another shot on the offensive end and Will Chye found a cutting Washington, who scored to make it 75-70. Alpena responded with a bucket from Chas Stanek for a bucket. An MCC turnover gave the hosts a chance to tie the game, but MCC’s swarming defense forced a low percentage shot that missed the mark.

Chye led the Jayhawks (13-9) with 18 points. He also had five rebounds and three steals. Freshman forward Ny’Zhem Marshall turned in another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Washington had 14 points and six rebounds.

MCC, 6-2 in conference play, travels to Montcalm Community College at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
