NEWAYGO – The Newaygo girls basketball team made a late fourth-quarter push, but couldn’t get ahead in a 46-39 loss to Cedar Springs on Thursday night.
The Lions were down by 11 points going into the fourth quarter and managed to cut the deficit to three with three minutes left. However, they just couldn’t make up any more ground to steal the lead.
“Tough loss tonight for the girls. We played hard and executed pretty well, but we just missed way too many shots in the paint and from the free-throw line,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “It wasn’t from a lack of effort, but you won’t beat a good team like Cedar Springs. I’m proud of this group though.”
Kija Schultz posted a double-double of 16 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, while Amaya Lathrop threw in 10 points, five rebounds and four steals. Ruby Hughes scored four points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Newaygo (18-4, 8-2) visits Fremont on Wednesday for the semifinal round of the Division 2 district tournament.
