SCOTTVILLE – Mason County Central softball hosted the Bear Lake Lakers on Friday in what turned out to be a family event in more ways than one.
Jonathan Blake has been the head coach at Mason County Central for the past six years, with this being his seventh, while the Lakers are coached by his son, Isaac Blake.
“It’s certainly a very unique game,” said MCC coach Jonathan Blake. “Son or not, I told my players that they needed to do their jobs and win the games.
“We had some errors that led to runs that we shouldn’t have given up, but they made up for it at the plate and got two dubs. I would certainly love to beat some other teams and coaches rather than my son, but he understands this is all business.”
MCC outlasted the Bear Lake Lakers, 15-8, for the first win of the night, and season.
Aubrey Chey started in the pitcher’s circle for MCC, giving up just one hit over three innings.
Chey walked four and struck out six.
Offensively, the Spartans were led by senior Madi Sherretz who went 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs.
Payton Cory, Chey, Ellen Haner, Ellie Bendele and Jordyn Melvin each had one hit with Chey and Cory hitting doubles.
In Game 2, the Spartans put the game away early with a 17-2 win in three innings.
Chey pitched all three innings in the win. Chey gave up one hit, two earned runs, six walks and five strikeouts.
The Spartans were led at the plate by Melvin, going 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI. Chey and senior Mikaylah McVicker each had a hit and one RBI.
MCC is now 2-2 on the season, 0-2 in conference play and will host Pine River area on Monday.
