Mona Shores defense stepped up in its 54-31 girls basketball win over visiting Forest Hills Eastern in its season opener on Tuesday.

The Sailors held Eastern to just 16 total points after taking a 16-15 first-quarter lead. 

Mona Shores sophomore Khaleeya Cook gave the Sailors an early spark, scoring eight of her 13 points in the opening quarter.

Senior Olivia Sobczak led Mona Shores with a game-high 15 points while Ali Phillips and Jenna Tierman added eight points apiece. 

Mona Shores next travels to Hudsonville on Friday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
