NORTON SHORES–Dual-sport athlete Kyla Wiersema has signed her national letter of intent to pursue a volleyball and basketball collegiate career. On Monday, Kyla signed to attend Grand Rapids Community College.
GRCC is a member of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association. The Raiders women’s basketball team finished 20-11 overall, 14-4 in the conference, which was good for third place.
The Raiders’ volleyball team also had a solid year with a 24-7 overall record, 14-0 in MCCAA play. GRCC went on to play in the Great Lakes District B tournament, where they fell to seventh-ranked Terra State Community College.
Wiersema played three years at the varsity level for the Western Michigan Christian girls’ basketball team. Wiersema went on to be first team all-state in both basketball and volleyball. She will be joined by her twin sister, Maddie, who will also play basketball and volleyball.
“Kyla is probably the most decorated dual sport volleyball player and basketball player to ever come out of WMC,” said WMC basketball coach Jeremy Goorman. “First team all-state in both volleyball and basketball is amazing. She set the single season scoring record and is a 1,000 point scorer. Kyla and Maddie are the most caring people I have ever coached.”
Wiersema has a 4.04 GPA at WMC and is undecided on a major.
She is the daughter of Tom and Kate Wiersema.
