The Hesperia wrestling team is headed to the state quarterfinals after capturing a Division 4 regional championship on Wednesday in its own gym.LSJ Logo incert

The Panthers defeated Kent City 54-21 in the regional semifinals and St. Louis 43-27 in the finals.

They will now compete in the quarterfinals on Feb. 26 at Central Michigan University. The semifinals and finals are the following day.

Collecting victories for Hesperia in the regionals were Connor Baird (103), Kurtis Stitt (119), Davian Gowens (125), Trentyn Gleason (140), Gerrit Yates (145), Logan Eaves (152), Zach Young (160), Nate Smith (171), Mark Workman (189), Tristin Rubin (215), and Josh Ehrke (285).

“Our wrestling team has endured quite a lot over the last couple years, so it feels outstanding to get back into the finals,” said Hesperia Coach Doug Baird. “The kids really brought a good hard-nosed effort to the mat tonight and I’m really excited for them because they deserve this.”
